Quid pro quo: I hand over money to rent this DVD and I get to watch the fascinating background of one of the most mysterious movie villains of all time. Well, not quite.
I don’t know…maybe this movie just caught me at a bad time. Perhaps if I had never seen The Phantom Menace, I might have actually been more excited to see Hannibal Rising (2007). But I remembered the old adage: fool me once, shame on you-- fool me twice, shame on me. There was a time, not so long ago, when I was willing to wait in line for several hours, just to get the chance to see Darth Vader in his youth. Boy, was I naïve. Instead of profound story subtleties, all I got were podraces, $5 popcorn, and pointless subplots.
Hannibal Rising is just as disappointing. I don’t want my villains dissected and over-examined. I don’t want the evil of Vader explained any more than I want the iciness of Lecter to be warmed over with some ridiculously sympathetic trip through his formative years. Save the tired and clichéd psychology for Freud (“Tell me about your mother, Hannibal”), just leave me with the disturbing realization that I have no way to explain the menace that stands before me. Now that’s scary..
