Epic Movie

In this age of celluloid cynicism, there is the oft repeated refrain that they just don’t make movies like they used to. Apparently, once upon a time, things like characterization, plot, intelligent dialogue, and, well, maybe a point to the film actually mattered. As if…

Epic Movie (2007) is such a wonderful title for this brilliant satire of recent Hollywood blockbusters, because it is a broad, sweeping, superlative example of perfection on the silver screen.

Okay, I can’t do it anymore. Even sarcasm is hard to write with such worthless material to mock. The only thing epic about this movie is its stupidity. “Filmmakers” Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer, two of the contributing writers of the Scary Movie series, have delivered a pantheon of tasteless humor and pointless gags. At least a few of the Scary Movie films (the first, third and fourth installments) had some redeeming satirical value. Epic Movie has nothing to offer, except urine in the snow and a flood of projectile vomit. Yum…

Although it is difficult to come up with anything positive to say about this film, two things do come to mind: First off, the scene inside Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory is very well done. The underrated Crispin Glover plays Wonka with a perfectly creepy flat affect, and this is one of the highlights of the movie. Alas, it ends too soon. The film, however, does not. It ends right on time, just 85 minutes after it began…and this is something like cinematic euthanasia. It is almost as if Friedberg and Seltzer realized how cruel it would be to keep their audience sitting any longer than this. Mercifully, they let us walk away before the 90 minute mark, and that is a gift of epic proportion.
