In order to write a review, the critic must first determine what the movie is about. At least, it helps. Blood and Chocolate (2007), challenges this notion, however, with its murky plotline and atmospheric ambiguity. Or perhaps categorizing this kind of film is simply too daunting a task. Lame werewolf tale? Trashy Harlequin romance novel? You take your pick, but either way, it goes on for way too long. And that might be the scariest part of this film.
Blood and Chocolate opens with slow motion scenes, then the rest of the movie seems to run in slow motion. At just over 90 minutes, it actually feels more like 2 hours of horrifying dialogue and frighteningly bad special effects. Directed by Katja von Garnier--who previously directed nothing I’ve ever heard of--and starring a bunch of young actors who need better agents, Blood and Chocolate is quite possibly the worst werewolf movie I have ever seen. If there are worse ones out there (a terrifying thought), I shudder at the prospect of ever viewing them.
Never mind the plot…it doesn’t matter. Rent The Wolf Man, The Howling, An American Werewolf in London…heck, rent Teen Wolf if you have to…just stay away from Blood and Chocolate. Not even a silver bullet can kill this kind of monster..
